BIO
Nikola Mihajlović (b. 1986, Belgrade, Serbia) is a contemporary painter based in Belgrade. Trained as an architect at the University of Belgrade, he began painting on walls and has worked on murals and public walls across Europe and in Asia since 2015. The wall is where his painting comes from: his first paintings, made in 2015–16 on OSB board in wood glue, façade paint, sand and water, brought the wall’s own materials onto the panel, and spray has stayed in the work since.
His architectural training developed one side of the work far beyond the other: constructing, measuring, and deciding an edge in advance. The paintings largely argue between that side and an impulse that moves before it can justify itself. Early on, the edge is imposed, a hard shape laid onto a poured surface; later, the contour becomes a wall holding worked paint inside the figure, then comes loose and spreads across the whole picture. From 2021, the stroke itself is cut and given sides. In the same year, he set the argument aside to work on the untrained side alone: on unprimed paper, he gave up defined form entirely and changed medium from acrylic to oil, which stays open and keeps moving under the hand. In 2023 those fields went onto canvases of about two by three meters, large enough for the viewer to stand inside them, and in 2024 light entered them from the edge, with bare canvas left in the painting as the last light. The recent work puts both sides back on one surface: a drawn grid and a gestural field that do not resolve each other, and a flat color laid last that sets the limits of a mass without ever drawing them.
His work has been shown in solo exhibitions including Interweaving at Espace Témoin, Geneva (2018), and, in Belgrade, Cosmic Noise (U.K. Parobrod, 2016), Transmutation (Bioskop Balkan, 2021), Towards Radical (Vjeran Pas, 2021) and Distance(s) (Lag Gallery, 2023). Group exhibitions include Traces: Street Art of Serbia and France 1995–2022 at the Serbian Cultural Center, Paris (2023) and Likovna Jesen, Sombor (2018). He was a resident at Glo’Art, Lanaken (2018), and has taken part in festivals including iBug (Leipzig), Quai36 (Paris) and StArt India (Hyderabad). From 2012 to 2013, he managed the restoration and conservation of frescoes at the monasteries of the Peć Patriarchate, Gračanica and Dečani, under UNESCO auspices. His paintings are held in private collections in Serbia, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, and the United States.
